SOUND MIND is a raw, electrifying new musical about teens entering an inpatient mental health facility, where group therapy becomes a space for connection and healing. Character Breakdown
Our goal is to collaborate with our selected actors to shape these roles and bring each character to life with authenticity, honesty, and individuality. All characters in SOUND MIND are fictional.
Rialto [Male-Identifying, 14-21 years old] is 15, has PTSD. He has been in and out of foster homes and abused when he was little. He is always on edge and distrusts anyone trying to befriend him. He shoplifts and lies to cover his fear and pain.
Lila-Claire (“LC”) [Female-Identifying, 14-21 years old] is 16, comes from an upper middle class family in Teaneck, and has intense social phobia. It started with being afraid to speak up in class and has now turned into hiding in her room and avoidant behavior.
Pax [Male-Identifying, 14-21 years old] is the borderline–17, constantly bursting with rage he can’t control. His dad walked out when he was a toddler and his mom works two jobs so she’s never home. He picks fights in school and has been expelled twice.
Rhyme [Female-Identifying, 14-21 years old] is 17-year-old teenage girl suffering from depression. Her dad is in jail and her mom is an alcoholic. She’s a poet, reads Toni Morrison and Sylvia Plath and wants to be Amanda Gorman one day. She pours her pain into her writing—she has also self-harmed.
Liberty [Female-Identifying, 14-21 years old] Lib for short is 16 and from a military family who is frequently uprooted. She craves stability, but is constantly having to attend new schools, make new friends etc. She has OCD and intrusive thoughts of her dad being killed in a war somewhere and she can’t shake them. She has constant night terrors where she sleepwalks and wakes up screaming.
JoJo [Female-Identifying, 14-21 years old] the youngest member of the group, is 14, a queer boy from NYC. His two moms worry about his anxiety and panic attacks but don’t know how or why they started. He’s hiding the fact that he has been bullied (physically and verbally) by homophobic jocks in his new high school.
Ensemble [All Genders, 14-21 years old] we are seeking an intimate but mighty ensemble cast of strong singers, dancers and actors between 14-21 years old. May understudy the principal roles as well.
